B-Side Players + Passafire: Friday, June 18, 2010 - 9:45 PM - close
The B-Side Players are part of a new movement in popular music, a band that honors the international cross-pollination that has always made music the universal language. They use any beat that catches their ear, regardless of geography or genre, to create a compelling, horn driven, polyrhythmic groove. “The root of all pop music is African,” says Karlos Paez, the band’s lead vocalist, trumpet player and founder. “Our sound acknowledges that fact. That’s why the music is so soulful. We’re playing the ancient beats that came from Africa to create reggae, son, Afro-beat and funk and mixing ’em all together.”
The band has been laying down their own inimitable global funk since they came together in 1994. Their incendiary live shows made them local legends, while their albums showcased a band with a restless musical intelligence, effortlessly blending genres to fashion their own forward looking, Latin flavored, future-funk.
Fire In The Youth was produced by the band with the help of Quetzal Flores, leader of the Los Angeles band Quetzal, another group with a wide-ranging style based in the Latin American continuum. “Quetzal performed all the guitar tracks on the record,” Paez explains. “His eclectic arrangements helped polish our Latin, Mexican, Cuban, Funk and Rock vibe. He also brought a folkloric feel to some of the tracks with his knowledge of Jarocho (a syncopated Afro/Spanish style from Vera Cruz, Mexico) and bajo sexto ( a 12 string instrument with a sound somewhere between 12-string guitar and acoustic bass.) We recorded the whole record in 10 days, live in the studio, then added the vocals, percussion and horns.”
Like their past recordings, Fire In The Youth captures the band’s scorching musicianship and fierce political energy. The album kicks off with “Alegria”, an earth shaking reggatron groove marked by a strong salsa flava. “(Unplug) This Armageddon” rides a high stepping disco funk backbeat while Paez delivers a sizzling Bob Marley-influenced vocal full of soul and sufferation. The song explores the lives of the people that drift from San Diego, to Tijuana, to Los Angeles in search of a better life. The band suggests a return to the Earth and community as an antidote for the technology that seems to be sucking the soul out of modern life. “Fire In The Youth” combines a subtle trip hop pulse, a hint of more reggae, a lush string section and a children’s choir to offer a prayer for the salvation of the next generation. It’s one of the most moving songs the band’s ever recorded.

CRASH TEST DUMMIES @ Brixton: Thursday, June 10, 2010 - 8:00 PM
There is no mistaking Brad Roberts’ voice. He may look like an average guy, now in his mid-40s, but then he opens his mouth and his majestic baritone voice immediately conjures fond memories of such Crash Test Dummies hits at “Mmm, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm” and “Superman.” Perhaps best remembered for the acerbic folk rock sound of 1991’s The Ghosts That Haunt Me and 1993’s God Shuffled His Feet, there have nonetheless been enough hits for the band over the years to merit a couple of greatest hits packages. Through it all, the band with Roberts at the helm has touched on funk and soul, folk, electronic music and even Christmas tunes. Yet it is Roberts’ voice and offbeat lyrical sensibility that have been this beloved band’s calling cards since their founding twenty years ago.

Stepping Feet: Friday, April 30, 2010 - Saturday, May 01, 2010 - 8:00pm till 1:00am
Genre: Jam Band
Info: San Diego's Stepping Feet hammers home the Dave Matthews Band Experience. Their high energy shows will bring you back to the days when DMB was still playing small clubs trying to make it. Come witness the soaring sax solos, signature violin riffs, syncopated drums fills, funky bass lines, and all the passion and energy you'd want from a front man.
On tour this summer, Stepping Feet will hit Phoenix, El Paso, NYC, New London, Manchester, Narragansett, Newport, Nantucket, Boston, and Worcester! We'll do our best to play all of your favorites. If not, there's always next time!
"Our goal is to bring the same energy, passion, and musicianship to the stage that DMB delivers. While most of our set follows the signature riffs you've come to hear on the studio/live album, we like to open it up so that our individual style shines through. We're all about having fun up there on stage and hopefully that comes through to the audience"! Link: http://www.myspace.com/tributetodavematthews Support: Josh Halverson, Kalu, Brent George

Sashamon: Saturday, April 24, 2010 - Sunday, April 25, 2010 - 8:00pm till 1:00am
Headliner: Sashamon Genre: Reggae / Surf / Hawaiian Info: Sashamon (sa-sha’-mon) - Maybe because he grew up on Molokai, Sashamon’s music brings a unique peaceful vibe to the island music scene. The public first heard Sashamon’s blend of Reggae and Hawaiian music on a homemade demo, which spread worldwide with the support of top Kauai professional surfers. The popular underground CD 'One Day Maybe' found its way to KWHI 92.7 Hawaiian Rhythms on the Big Island of Hawaii. With no press kit or label support, “Japanese Squeeze” amazingly became the station’s most requested song and stayed on top for two months. “Japanese Squeeze” was replaced by another Sashamon song “Necta” (Butterfly) and it’s popularity caused Big Island’s KAPA 100.3 and KWXX 94.7 to give airplay as well. Soon “Necta” hit the top of the charts and most requested at Oahu stations including KCCN FM 100, KINE 105.1, KDNN 98.5, as well as the top stations on Maui and Kauai where it continues in heavy rotation to this day! Visit Hawaii and you will surely hear Sashamon on the radio. And like the love for Hawaii that is everywhere in the world so too is Sashamon’s music, which is now getting airplay in Japan, Brazil, Australia, Germany, France, Tahiti & more..
Sashamon also just signed a major label & distribution deal with JVC/Sony for Japan so look out for the Japanese Squeeze takeova! And watch for the new album 'Only Way' coming soon. Mahalo Nui! Link: http://www.myspace.com/sashamonmusic Support: TBA

100 Monkeys w. Joey DeGraw, James McKenna: Friday, February 05, 2010 - Saturday, February 06, 2010 - 8:00pm - 1:00am Presented By: Saint Rocke
Ben G - was assembled in the port of juarang, but his parts were made in thailand. traveled to the states in 91 with his brother and mule, and they never would've made it if ben wasn't a submersible, "that means i work underwater." ben started playing music two januarys ago.
Ben J. - discovered in the woods of illinois, captured and brought to NY where he learned to hit things in rhythmic fashion that pleas-eth the ear. rescued by spencer bell, and brought to WI where he continued to hit things in rhythmic delight for the band, The Stevedores. After braving the winters of WI, he migrated southwest to Los Angeles, and started hitting things in rhythmic fashion that so pleas-eth the ear as a 100 Monkey.
J. Action - parts made in indonesia, assembled in singapore, raised on airplane peanuts and bathed in airport restroom sinks, he was saved by texas. given a guitar and a coat he accidentally ventured into the unknown... a wormhole opened, and he found himself in La La Land. he learned how to stand where they told him to, say what they told him to and never lie. rescued by the 100 Monkeys, he now swings about the stage in gratitude.
J. Rad - an agile primate, swung on bars and competed as an acrobat for many years. Is of a rare breed, having the ability to communicate via sign language. He adapted to a coastal habitat, surfing and skateboarding as a way to pass time. However, it wasn’t until he mastered the technique of the singing strings and melodic hammer machine, that the 100 monkeys rushed to claim him as their own.
Uncle Larry - known only as Uncle since discovered at the age of four by a band of traveling musicians, he wouldn’t stop hitting things. For that reason he was given a drum and put to work. After learning the meaning of life at the age of 7 he found learning every instrument a simple task. He proceeded to continue his travels and learned all knowledge worth learning. After happening upon a troupe of monkeys he officially became a monkeys uncle.

Makana w. Jerry Joseph: Sunday, January 31, 2010 - Monday, February 01, 2010 - 8:00pm - 1:00am Presented By: Saint Rocke
The March 1, 2003, Esquire Magazine notes, “Makana is considered the greatest living player” of Slack Key Guitar. Many others agree. In April of 2009, The National Geographic Society (NGS) presented Makana in concert and the event was recorded for the NGS Music Channel series “Geo Sessions”. On their Web site, the NGS wrote, “With five albums to his credit [now 6], he has taken this centuries-old tradition and blasted it into the 21st century, fusing it with influences from Bob Marley to the Smashing Pumpkins, and opening for Sting and Santana. See why this young guitar hero is poised to break out.” In September of 2009, the San Francisco Chronicle said, “His transfixingly agile slack-key technique and genre-crossing music have relit a fire for live music in Waikiki.” With such accolades, it‟s hard to believe that Makana is only 31.
Early on, Makana was recognized as a child prodigy and he studied with Hawai'i slack key legends Raymond Kane and Sonny Chillingworth. He began performing professionally at Honolulu‟s Duke‟s Canoe Club at age 15 and has since produced his own shows in many of Hawaii‟s other significant venues.
On August 27, 2009, Makana with his band and dancers concluded a successful two-month engagement, reopening the renovated Royal Hawaiian Hotel‟s Monarch Room and inaugurating the hotel‟s new “Curators of Hawaiian Music” series. The legendary venue had been dark for 14 years and the headline of the August 14, 2009, Honolulu Advertiser review by veteran Hawai'i Entertainment Reporter, Wayne Harada read, “Makana proves he's a master of the showroom.”
