Chevron Surf Camp: Monday, June 29 - Monday, August 31 - 9:00 a.m.

The City of Hermosa Beach Surf Camp is one of the South Bay’s most popular summer programs for kids ages 7-17 years. Learn about the ocean environment, basic surf techniques, tricks, ocean safety, and safe places to surf. Weekly classes meet Mon-Fri (except the day of July 4 and the week of Aug. 22) with two sessions per week: 9-10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. to 12:25 p.m.
Surf classes maintain a 1:6 teacher-to-student ratio that promotes safety and a lot of individual attention. Each student uses a BZ soft surfboard and receives three photos, T-shirt and rash guard. Wetsuits are recommended. You must be an intermediate swimmer to participate. Bring water, snack and sweatshirt if attending both sessions. The camp is run by long time surfer Vince Ray. Ray has been teaching surfing for 17 years and is competing in NSSA, WSA, ASA, and other local surf contests. He also coaches junior high kids, so they have a better chance of making the high school surf teams.
One class: $124/$119 resident discount Two classes: $204/$199. Sign ups available at www.hermosabch.orgContact director Vince Ray at 370-1918.

Quack Attack: A SURF SHOW: Friday, August 21 - 7pm - close

Well known still-photographer John Wayne Miller's Multi-media Production "Quack Attack" premieres Friday, August 21st, at Hermosa Community Theater.

Miller activates his camera's motor drive to capture sequential surfing shots at four frames a second. Miller shot tens of thousands of these images over a period of 90 days, between the Fall of 2008 and the Winter of 2009. All images were taken at Hermosa Pier, documenting the height of our local surfing season.

In the audio-video studio, these images are linked together at speeds of up to 30 frames a second and slowed to more than a frame a second, for closer examination. The speed variations give the viewer a sense of time compression and expansion, that draws one into the audio and visual effects.

Collaborating with professional video editor and song writer Cory Lombardelli, who has scored the show with all original music, Miller weaves a story of not only the surfing at the Pier, but the antics that make up a 'total Pier experience'.

Pre-show live entertainment begins at 7:00 p.m., with local heart throb Kevin Sousa on guitar, joined by former 'Zappa' saxophone player Bill 'Stumuk" Nugent.

The event is sponsored by the Hermosa Arts Foundation, who will be guest bartending in the lobby (Beer and Wine) with those proceeds going to the HAF.

Admission is $10 at the door.

For more information, head over to Quack Attack's site.

Occupying the former property of the shabu-shabu restaurant Ebizo's Skewer, the owners knocked the front wall out and opened up the whole facade to downtown Manhattan Beach. The result is a relaxed, airy atmosphere that has the feel of Miami Beach without the attitude. Located in the heart of the city, the ocean and MB Pier are a straight shot just 2 blocks away.

St. Patrick's Day in the South Bay!!

Get ready for one of the biggest days of the year in the South Bay! Redondo, Hermosa and Manhattan Beach are all gearing up for the Irish drinking holiday. For those that have never been here for this special occasion, a few tips:
1. Get to the bar really, really early. Even though it's on a Tuesday this year, people do and will take the day off of work.
2. Choose a bar based on your mood. Hennesey's in Redondo, Hermosa or Manhattan are absolutely nuts, and you should be in a wild (but patient) mindset. Sharkeez, Fenner's and Patrick Molloy's in Hermosa Beach are also crazy, and you will get beer on your clothes. That's the whole point, though.
3. If you want a toned-down St. Paddy's, head to Barnacles, Mermaid or North End in Hermosa, or Shark's Cove in Manhattan or Hermosa.
4. Call in sick Wednesday!
5. Head over to South Bay Events for more updates as the big day approaches!
